Seneca Hard Hat Illustration

This is a pen and ink illustration inspired by our Ironworkers. The image has several meaningful motifs to our Haudenosaunee people. There is the Tree a Peace Symbol with the White Roots of Peace, The Sky Dome motif along the side and the brim has the interweave design or also known as the unity design. Then there is the one feather up symbolizing the Seneca Kastowa. Our men, when put onto reservation were put into the role of women doing agricultural duties and I believe lost a lot of their self-importance within themselves and many turned to alcohol. Ironworking was a way to bring back that pride of being able to provide for their families again and also brought back an old way of life, where the man would leave to hunt weeks or months at a time and return with the spoils and stories of the hunt. The reason I incorporated the floral beadwork design was to show the women’s role as well. Many times the women would bring in extra monies by doing crafts such as basketry and or beadwork. So, there it is.
