SYMBOLISM IN THE WORK
The strawberry comes to the Haudenosaunee people from the sky world, a planet within the constellation Pleiades. In that world is a tree which provides every type of sustenance, and around that tree grew strawberries amongst other things. A woman that lived there fell through a hole that was created at a time when the tree was uprooted and while she fell, she clung onto anything she could grasp the strawberry was one of these things. The strawberry is considered the leader of the berries and has its own festival in the longhouse during the summer; it is at this time children are given their native names. The five white blossoms represent the original 5 nations of the Haudenosaunee. (Mohawk,Oneida,Onondaga,Cayuga,Seneca) from east to west. Three on one side are elder brothers to the two on the other side and the stem connects them all in unity.
